Folkloric Dances

São João – It goes from June 13th (Santo Antônio’s day) to the 30th. For those who have heard about Bumba-meu-boi, Quadrilha, Tambor de Crioulla and many other typical dances from the State of Maranhão have an idea of what is all about, but for those who are new to it all, the advice is to program a trip to São Luís and check for yourself because texts and photos do not show the magnitude of it.

Carnaval – The street carnaval of São Luís has many popular dances. The streets get full of fofões (typical costume), Indian tribes (typical group), blocos-de-sujos (groups that throw wheat flour on everyone) tradicional groups, Casinha da Roça (moving house) and the samba groups.

Festa do Divino – It is commemorated in May in many cities of Maranhão, but the one commemorated in Alcântara is unbeatable.
